Daily Devotion (with thanks to James Finley)

Spirituality writer, James Finley, urges that we establish a daily rendezvous with God, in order to train ourselves to become increasingly sensitive to the wondrous reality of “the upwelling of God's infinite love being poured out unexplainably and being completely given to us as God's beloved”.

Fortunately, God's eternal loving oneness with us is not dependent on the degree to which we realize it. Whether we realize it or not, we are the beloved. We are the generosity of God. We are the song God sings. Our ‘belovedness’, says Thomas Merton, is beating in our very blood whether we want it to or not.

Amazingly, God’s self-donating love is INFINITE. Once we recognize that God's love is by very nature, infinite, we stop trying to portion it out. Half of infinity is still infinity. Appreciating the infinite love of God, helps stop us from trying to categorize God, marginalize God, or limit God.

By the cultivation of a daily rendezvous with God, we experientially ground ourselves in our faith, and help nurture a deepening sense of God’s sustaining presence in our lives. Because that which is essential, namely, that we are the beloved, never imposes itself. That which is unessential is constantly imposing itself – we're constantly distracted by the demands of the nonessentials. So, we do well to set aside a daily rendezvous, a kind of a quiet time, in which there is no agenda but to open our hearts to the love of God that's always with us. Finley says: “this rendezvous is a descent down into a renewed intimate awakening”.

A life of devotional sincerity is where we renew our awareness of the power of the spirit who dwells in our hearts.
