Zuki Nongoma

Aug 16, 2014 children death

On Wednesday, we received the tragic news that Zuki Nongoma had passed away very suddenly in the Stanger Hospital. Zuki was employed by UMC in our first year here - you may have met her during the time when she worked at the church on Mondays and Fridays, but for some time now she has lived at the manse with us and been a member of our household. She has cared for our family, and our children love her, particularly Anna, with whom she has spent many hours. Zuki was in her early thirties. Our hearts break for her son (12 years) and her Mom both of whom live in Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape. They and a number of other young relatives depended on Zuki's salary.

Zuki was also a close friend of Maggie's (who cooks and cleans for us here at the church). At times like this there are always so many questions, and talking it through with our young sons has provided a new perspective: they seek to understand the details of death but are not yet afraid of it. In them we have seen this week simple, child-like faith in a God of love. A God who can be trusted, even when circumstances make trust hard. We have lost a caring and loyal friend and colleague. We will miss her so much, and we pray for God's peace and comfort for her family.

As we have sought to come to terms with the loss of a friend, we have also been reflecting on the tragic death of actor Robin Williams – a man who seemed to have it all. Times like this serve as a reminder to us that life is fragile, and while we may feel (or appear) invincible, we are not. Let us then use the moments we are given as best we can, to love and to live. To say what needs saying and do what needs doing. And in all things to trust in God, who loves us more than we can ever fully understand.
