On this 4th Sunday of Advent we focus on JOY! In a world where there is so little reason for joy, we do well to identify and savour that which brings us joy. A trusted source of joy is relationships. Maybe that is why Esther Perel says, “The quality of our relationships determines the quality of our lives.” A colleague writes: “Bad relationships bring tremendous grief. But good ones bring disproportionate joy. Whether it’s our families, spouses, children, parents, friends, colleagues, sports team members, or any other group in-person or online, connection with others is one of our greatest sources of joy.”

One of the biggest privileges of ministry is that it is so relational. People from all walks of life generously invite you into their lives and you get to share in many of their significant moments. The diversity of humanity has always fascinated me and I marvel at how different people do life in such a variety of ways. It has always felt as if I get the better end of the deal – you bless me far more than I bless you.

Today is one year since I formally started at UMC. I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know everyone here. You are amazing. I thank you for your tolerance and your goodwill. You have been very affirming of me, and your Christmas gift is overwhelmingly generous. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you!!! Our relationship is cause for JOY in my life! I count myself most fortunate to serve as your minister!

May I take this opportunity to wish you and your loved ones a Christmas full of meaning and a New Year full of promise. God grant you reason for Hope, Peace, Love and Joy!
