News January 2015

Jan 18, 2015 Michael Bishop UMC news

Here are a couple of news items relating our community at UMC:

1. During 2014 we told you about the special needs school that was due to open on our property at the beginning of 2015. As we sat together to plan late last year it became very clear that our property would not be ideal for the school, primarily because we have tight power constraints (we would not be able to supply sufficient electricity to the school without spending hundreds of thousands on a new municipal transformer). We were delighted to hear this week that the school has found ideal premises near Dudley Pringle Dam and opened its doors to its first children this week. We wish Basil and Nirasha and their team all the best and look forward to supporting their work.

2. The property neighbouring the church (between us and the N2) was bought some time back by a large independent church (Tim Omotoso Global Outreach). The church has submitted plans to develop the land and build a large church on the property. They are required to carry out an environmental impact assessment because much of the property is wetland. We've been approached as neighbours and have asked to be kept informed. If you are interested in having a look at the development plans, there are documents available for inspection at the Salt Rock Library. At this stage we have flagged a couple of potential issues (the ability of the access road to handle a significant traffic increase and questions relating to municipal services – electricity and water-borne sewerage). We'll let you know when we have more details.

3. You will remember from our AGM that we adopted this mission statement: “we are a worshipping community, making disciples of Jesus to change our world”. We also invited you to participate in the planning exercise that flows out of that mission. Three workshops will be held in the evenings of 3, 5 and 10 February dealing with the three aspects of that mission statement. If one or more of those areas is your passion, come along and help us put flesh on the bones of this vision! Give us a call or email if you have any questions.
