A busy season

Michael Bishop 16 Feb 2016 lent  prayer  sunday blog

We met on Wednesday evening to mark the beginning of Lent with our Ash Wednesday service. The church was full and it really was so good that we could be together as communities from Umhlali, Westbrook and Tongaat. Now begins a busy season as we start the journey to Easter:

  • our Lent course begins this week (Wednesday evenings at 7pm and Thursday mornings at 08h30 (Umhlali) and Thursday evening at 7pm (Westbrook). We are working through a DVD series based on John Ortberg's book, “Who is this man?” Everyone's welcome to come along.
  • we start a new preaching series this morning, titled Catechumenate (yes, it's a mouthful!) The series connects us with the practice of the ancient church of preparing catechumens (students) for baptism on Easter Sunday. Using Martin Luther's catechism as a syllabus, we will be reminded of what it is to be a learning community (catechumenate) of disciples. We'll also be invited to remember our own baptism as we approach Easter, recognising that in the mystery of the cross, we are baptised into his death and raised with Jesus into new life.
  • many of you have bought Trevor Hudson's little book “Pauses for Lent”. A short reading is provided for each day of Lent and I know that some of you are meeting together regularly to talk through what you're discovering in your times of reading and prayer. Great idea!
  • yesterday June led a group of us wonderfully in a guided retreat at the church. What a wonderful way to enter into this most sacred season! Look out for three more retreats during the year.

May you be blessed as we travel together over the coming weeks.
